A 100-year-old Japanese company with an Indian subsidiary, Yamato Scale India has been functioning from its office in the Delhi-NCR since 2005. Yamato offers solutions for automatic weighing and filling in packaging applications, industrial weighing solutions for heavy industries, weighing and controlling for power, cement, chemical and rubber industries. Yamato is a manufacturer and supplier of multihead weighers, auger fillers, loss-in-weight-fillers, check weighers, metal detectors and x-ray inspection machines that are a part of the filling and sealing process for packaging applications. The company has a presence in more than 80 countries worldwide.

Multihead packaging weighers were first developed by Ishida in the 1970s and the product has widespread applications in the FMCG sector. Ishida and Yamato sell multihead weighers in India now and have been competitors over the years. These were initially used for weighing certain vegetables. The use expanded exponentially when they were introduced in the FMCG sector. Some manufacturers also offer complete packaging lines, integrating the multihead weigher with other packaging machinery ranging from bag makers to tray sealers and inspection systems. The latter include check weighers and x-ray inspection systems. Multihead weighers are also known as combination scales. These use a number of different weight heads to generate precise measurements of products by calculating the weight in each weight head.

The weighing machines offered by the company are manufactured in Japan and China. Initially in order to develop its business, Yamato established relationships with reputed OEMs in the packaging sector. It offered servicing and price relaxation to a number of packaging machine manufacturers in order to gain their support. Beginning with these initial collaborations, the company’s business has grown in the Indian subcontinent and it is now the major supplier of automatic weighing machines to many packaging system suppliers in the region. The company manufactures standard weighing machines that can be incorporated to any packaging machine.

“In our business, we generally classify packaging companies into three categories, A, B and C. As per our market survey, we place companies in each category and have a specific approach to each and every company in every category,” says Utkarsh Tyagi, senior sales executive of Yamato Scale India. “The Indian market is opening up for new and more expensive technology. Realizing that, our company is planning to launch upgraded versions of our existing products in the market with better technology. And this time, we are looking for customers who are ready to invest in our product without compromising on the cost.”

Yamato India provides regional service support to its clients. The company has employed service engineers in every region of the country to ensure fast and timely servicing of its machines. The company says that it has a large clientele based in the Northern and Western regions of the country and also receives some market pull from several locations in the South.
