Digital product passports with smart packaging at AIPIA & AWA Congress 2025
A DPP promotes traceability by documenting each stage of an item’s journey—from raw material extraction to final delivery

The newest ‘hot topic’ for brands is the implications of introducing Digital Product Passports (DPPs) across a huge range of products, in terms of both implementation and cost. It puts Smart Packaging front and center of the need to invest in the right technologies. So the first panel discussion at this year’s AIPIA & AWA Congress 2025 brings together experts who can offer informed views on this topic, hence its title Smart Packaging in Combination with Digital Product Passport.

The five panel members are leading the way in getting to grips with DPPs using Smart Packaging technologies – Mike McCamon, executive director of NFC Forum has over 30 years’ experience of developing smart technologies; Steve Statler, CEO of AmbAI Inc is well known industry figure, his current company partners with third party applications that manage DPPs; Klaus Simonmeyer, VP strategic accounts EMEA for Identiv will moderate the session: Thomas Roedding, CEO, Narravero & co-Chair JTC 24, the body tasked with the development of deliverables for the DPP framework and system; and Jean-Rémi Ruiz the standardization & lobbying manager at STMicroelectronics, one of the world’s leading semiconductor makers and designers.

They will be offering some invaluable insights in how Smart Packaging can ‘clear the fog’ surrounding so much of the regulatory landscape about creating a truly Circular and Net Zero economy. Only AIPIA can bring together such a panel of specialist knowledge and experience to deliver actionable messages about the way forward. DPPs can and will work on a number of levels and the adoption of Smart Packaging can enhance these deliverables and offer genuine business potential.

One example is traceability which is increasingly important for consumers who want assurance about where their products come from. A DPP promotes traceability by documenting each stage of an item’s journey—from raw material extraction to final delivery. This level of openness not only builds consumer confidence but also holds companies accountable for their supply chains. As technology advances, so too will the capabilities of DPPs. Blockchain and IoT technologies increase the reliability and accuracy of the information provided.

The push towards more transparent product information isn’t just an industry trend—it’s becoming a regulatory necessity and a consumer requirement. Being informed at the start of your DPP journey is vital. And adopting the right materials, designs and technologies for your products will be critical to its success in the future.
