To strengthen the state’s technical education framework and meet growing industry demands, the directorate of technical education (DOTE), Chennai, has introduced a three-year diploma in packaging technology at the Institute of Printing Technology (IPT), Tharamani, Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Government has sanctioned approximately ₹3 crore for equipment, marking a major milestone for the printing and packaging sectors.
Recognizing the rapid expansion of the packaging industry, DOTE appointed M Nandakumar, principal of Arasan Ganesan Polytechnic College (AGPC), Sivakasi, as the program manager and convener to frame the new syllabus. The initiative also includes collaboration with the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), Chennai, to ensure that the curriculum aligns with national and industrial standards.
A series of three virtual meetings were held earlier this year, followed by a physical syllabus revision meeting on 8 September 2025, at IIP Chennai. The session was attended by academic and industrial experts, including representatives from Anna University, ITC, and Vijayneha Polymers.
During the meeting, members finalized the list of essential laboratory equipment and software to facilitate hands-on training in packaging design, testing, and production. Industry experts such as CAS Chidambara Vinayagam of ITC and Mohan Kumar of Vijayneha Polymers contributed insights on real-world testing procedures and advanced packaging technologies.
The first batch of students has already been admitted to IPT Chennai, with all seats filled—reflecting strong demand for this emerging discipline. Several packaging companies have also expressed interest in offering paid internships and recruitment opportunities to graduates of the new program.
Encouraged by the positive response, other polytechnic institutions under DOTE are expected to introduce similar programs in the coming years, paving the way for a new generation of skilled packaging professionals.
