Coca-Cola and United Resource Recovery are all set to formally open the world’s largest plastic recovery plant at Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA. It will be jointly owned and recycle PET bottles into food-grade PET resin. It has a capacity to produce about 100 million pounds (454,000 MT) annually – the equivalent of almost 2 billion 20-ounce Coca-Cola bottles.
The plant has been running trial production at low volumes since mid-November 2008 and is expected to attain full capacity during 2009. By 2010, Coca-Cola hopes to reuse or recycle 30 per cent of its bottles and cans in the US. It’s long-term objective is to raise this figure to 100 per cent as soon as possible.
