Hybrid updates iC3D software
Capture 3D is a way of mapping 2D artwork onto a 3D model, which is mainly aimed at producing accurate shrink sleeves.

Hybrid Software has released version 10 of its iC3D 3D packaging design software, which has gained several new features and now incorporates the Capture 3D technology announced last October.

Capture 3D is a way of mapping 2D artwork onto a 3D model, which is mainly aimed at producing accurate shrink sleeves. It has been developed by Hybrid Software, using technology that was originally developed by Quadraxis, which the group acquired in 2022 when that company fell into bankruptcy.

Nick De Roeck, co-president of Hybrid Software, said at that time, “During its 19 years of operation, Quadraxis developed some unique technology to simplify the capturing of 3D models to facilitate the distortion of graphic designs for shrink sleeves, embossed metal, and thermoformed plastic packaging.”

Capture 3D works by printing out a grid pattern and then shrinking this around the model and capturing the result with a 360º camera system. This allows the artwork to then be mapped onto the grid, compensating for the shrinkage, and can produce realistic 3D previews.

Thus iC3D 10 gains a new advanced warping template, integrated with the Capture 3D distortion software for metal cans, which allows users to select scanned model data, set parameters for the distortion grid, and generate designs for use in their company’s Packz software, which should improve the design workflow for metal can packaging.

Heath Luetkens, Hybrid software business manager for 3D Graphics, commented, “The deep integration with our recently acquired Capture 3D technology for accurate metal can printing strengthens our comprehensive solution suite for both brands and packaging converters, delivering a high-quality suite of tools trusted by the entire value chain.”

Elsewhere, iC3D 10 has picked up improvements to its OpenGL Standard viewer rendering of material to produce more realistic visuals. It includes tools for soft proofing and allows for customer feedback through a secure web browser. It integrates with Hybrid Software’s workflow production suite, CloudFlow.

There’s also a new option within the Transforms tool that allows users to adjust a model’s size by typing in the volumetric information, which should improve the process of creating accurate bottle models as it enables scaling based on volumetric calculations.

Separately, the Hybrid Software Group has released an interim report for the first half of its financial year, up to 30 June 2024. This shows that revenue has grown, from 24.9 million Euros to 26.9 million Euros over the same period last year. The adjusted net profit has risen from 1.36 million Euros to 3.99 million Euros. Mike Rottenborn, Hybrid Software Group CEO, commented, “Hybrid Software Group performed well in the first half of 2024, with rising revenues in all business segments.”
