Avery Dennison is one of the major labelstock companies operating in India at the moment with its product line including pressure-sensitive and non adhesive papers, films and foils. Its Fasson and Jac brand of label materials amongst others are widely used in brand identity, bar-code labelling systems, product identification and other applications by label converters and consumer products package designers and manufacturers.

Speaking to Packaging South Asia, Shailesh Kapur, director, product management, Asia Pacific, label and packaging material, tells us that the Indian packaging market is its fastest growing market in the world and is one of its strategic growth markets. India has been a unique proposition for many MNCs all over the world and for Avery it’s no different because of two main reasons, says Jitesh Mehta, director marketing, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. “The penetration in the Indian market has still a long way to go with tier-2, tier-3 cities and the regions even further beyond holding untapped potential and the growing Indian population which has a better spending capacity than before,” says Mehta.

The Fasson brand of label material from Avery Dennison has seen lot of growth

Gurgaon-based Avery Dennison has invested in the Indian label market along with its partners when it established the Avery Dennison Knowledge Centre (ADKC) in Bengaluru. “Knowledge and right skills are two important needs of the Indian market and at ADKC, the overall aim is to help make the industry better than before,” comments Mehta. Last year, a Prati slitter-rewinder was added to the ADKC and the latest addition has been a Gallus ECS340 label press. A spectrophotometer from Xrite will be added soon, informs Mehta.

The Indian market is showing growth in all segments and the overall mood in the market seems to be optimistic. “It’s quite clear that the industry is waiting for the roll-out of the GST in India and once that happens, it will prove to be a shot in the arm for the GDP of the country. We have been systematically investing in the country in response to the rapidly growing Indian market demands for label materials as retailers increasingly recognize the importance of packaging and branding. Till date, Avery Dennison has invested more than US$ 55 million in its Indian operations,” he says.

At the LMAI Conference 2015, Avery Dennison was the key sponsor once again. The major topics of discussion among the labelstock manufacturers at the LMAI Conference were the issues of sustainability. Shailesh Kapur of Avery Dennison had spoken about sustainability being a game changer. The company has been one of the biggest supporters of LMAI since its inception and intends to nurture this partnership. “Sustainable development means designing products, processes and services with environmental and societal concerns in mind,” he said emphasizing that waste management is the key to sustainability with reduction and reusability of waste being the best options for sustainability. Avery Dennison has been one of the biggest supporters of LMAI since its inception and intends to nurture this partnership in the long-term.
