In a recent policy change, the Indian government plans to make it mandatory for all packaged commodities sold in the retail market to put full details of the products irrespective of quantity. Labels should provide a detailed account of the product from ingredients to its usage instructions including price, ingredients, place of manufacturing and packaging, and manufacturing, packaging, and expiration dates.
A label ensures that the consumer knows what they are purchasing. This transparency builds trust and ensures the product is used correctly and safely. Till now, items sold in the retail market in packages weighing up to 25 kg were covered under this provision.
It was observed that packaged commodities above 25 kg are also available in the market for retail sale, which is not as per the intention to make all declarations on pre-packaged commodities meant for retail sale.
“We have proposed amendments to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules and have put this in the public domain for feedback till 29 June. The plan is to bring all packaged items sold in the retail market under the ambit of the rule. Packaged commodities meant for industrial and institutional consumers will be exempted from this provision,” media reports quoted an official from the Consumer Affairs Ministry as saying.
Mandatory packaging norms have been a key feature as these provide necessary details for consumers to make informed decisions before any purchase. The department said the amendments will help manufacturers, packers, and importers of packaged commodities of any quantity to make declarations.
