Scalable technology solutions to drive packaging growth

For Sakata Inx India, it is a mixed situation after demonetization. With oil prices going down in 2016, customers expected a reduction in prices but the market was witnessing a slow-down even before the currency demonetization in November. According to industry experts in both cartons and flexibles, the packaging sector, which had been growing at 10-12%, lost about 15% of its expected turnover from November right till the end of the financial year on 31 March 2017. At a time when many industrial segments were finally looking at the prospect of better growth, which was getting postponed from quarter to quarter over the past couple of years, the consumer product and packaging industries were among those quite badly hit by demonetization.

How to be innovative in the global packaging business?

As president of the international jury, more than 1,500 creations competing for each annual award pass through my hands. And the same goes for every year. I’ve no idea what they add up to. The global success of the Pentawards, founded 10 years ago by the designers Brigitte and Jean Jacques Evrard, is absolutely awe-inspiring. It is tempting to try to learn something from the awards list, even though packaging design is constantly on the move. It is especially tempting to wonder how creatives across the world approach the process of innovation. To be sure, trends appear and regional tendencies emerge; indeed, local quirks become ingrained with the passage of time. So much so that some members of the jury can identify the packaging’s country of origin at the fi rst glance—and they are seldom wrong. Let’s face it: although it is true that national culture has its effect on the creation of products and their packaging, especially in the realm of food, it is no less true that designers, whether from north or south, east or west, rely on the same methods when it comes to innovation.
