ExxonMobil partners with Alliance Films and Cloeren

Alliance Films partnered with international energy company ExxonMobil’s Signature Polymers and Cloeren to engineer a 67-layer NanoLayer film structure.

ExxonMobil had recently introduced its ExxonMobil Signature Polymers portfolio brand, focused on delivering best-in-class service and stronger partnerships across the polymers industry. ExxonMobil Signature Polymers brings together the company’s polyolefin products under a single brand, simplifying portfolio navigation and fostering enhanced collaboration across the value chain.

The packaging industry is increasingly demanding stretch films that combine exceptional stretchability, strong holding force, puncture resistance, and tear propagation performance. So Alliance Films set out to develop a power pre-stretch (PPS) film that meets these requirements while ensuring consistent processing and optimized wrapping efficiency.

Key components of the multilayer design include:

Exceed m 3518 & Exceed Tough m 3812: A nanolayer combination of metallocene polyethylene delivering a balance of toughness and stretchability.

Exceed Flow m 1716: A metallocene polyethylene core layer that enhances holding force.

Vistamaxx 6000: A performance polymer that improves tear propagation resistance.

Exceed Tough m 4536: A higher-density metallocene polyethylene layer used on the release side.

Exceed Tough m 3812 & Vistamaxx 6102: A blend forming the cling layer.

Most layers in the film structure use neat polymers rather than blends, enabling Alliance Films to fully leverage the molecular architecture of the performance polyethylene grades for enhanced mechanical properties.

Key results include:

High mechanical performance: Ultimate elongation of 490% and force at break of 131 N, with a stretch force of 105 N at 250% pre-stretch, delivering strong holding performance.

Wide working range and material efficiency: A Natural Draw Ratio (NDR) of 325% allows wrapping at high pre-stretch levels, reducing film usage per pallet.

Tear propagation resistance: The film maintains strong tear resistance at high elongation, with tear break times exceeding 25 seconds at 250% pre-stretch and 15 seconds at 300%.

Puncture resistance: Puncture strength remains high across 200–300% pre-stretch levels, ensuring reliable performance under demanding conditions.

Optimized wrapping performance: At 300% pre-stretch, the film delivered strong load containment and reduced film usage by approximately 10% compared to standard pre-stretch levels.

By leveraging ExxonMobil Signature Polymers resins and Cloeren’s NanoLayer technology, Alliance Films successfully developed a high-performance PPS film that delivers superior performance, quality, and efficiency.
