A Times of India headline news published on 23 February 2014 confirmed that the CBI investigating the rapid proliferation of NGOs in India on a Supreme Court directive found that India has now over 20 lakh registered NGOs and 1 in 600 people in India are in the booming NGO business. India’s mining industry has almost ground to a halt with bauxite, iron ore, coal, which were once on the export list now being imported due to intense activism, court cases and an increasingly coercive and bureaucratic regulatory regime. Mining licenses have become a rare commodity. Licence fees, unlicensed mining, and
bribe money to maintain the supply chain have risen sharply, imports have jumped as a result of which basic metal prices and manufacturing costs have risen.
The NGO and regulatory activism, it seems, is now shifting focus to the PET industry. Him Jagriti Welfare Society, a lawyer-led activist organization, filed court cases against the use of PET in the pharma industry that was summarily dismissed by the Supreme Court just months ago. However, the organization got the bureaucracy and the powerful Drug Technical Advisory Board to issue an order without any conclusive evidence about the harmful effects of PET. The DTAB has recommended phasing out of the material and that the first phase ban for primary packaging for liquid formulations for paediatric and geriatric use be implemented in six months time.
