Toppan Speciality Films (TSF), a manufacturer of speciality, label, and graphic lamination films and a 100% subsidiary of the Japan-headquartered Toppan group, has inaugurated its second cast polypropylene (CPP) production line at its factory in Rail Majra near Ropar in Punjab’s Bhai Mohan Singh Nagar.

“On 10th January 2025, we inaugurated our second CPP production line at our factory in RailMajra, Punjab…This achievement stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of our incredible team and the invaluable support of our stakeholders… as we embark on this new chapter, we are confident that line 2 will pave the way for future growth and set the stage for continued success,” the company posted on LinkedIn.

The new, customized CPP line from W&H with seven extruders – which Packaging South Asia has already written about in its previous issues after we visited the plant – doubles TSF’s capacity. The 7-layer line is in addition to TSF’s existing 5-layer operational CPP line.

The CPP line was delivered as per plan and the commissioning was completed in December 2024, Manohara Kumar, Chief Executive Officer and Whole-Time Director at Toppan, said.

“This addition helped TSF increase its capacity from roughly 5KTPA (kilo-tons per annum) to 11KTPA. The new customized CPP machine is specially designed to produce ultra-high-barrier metalized solutions as a part of TSF’s product development plan,” he told Packaging South Asia.

The new machine has the capability to extrude different polymers such as PE, EVOH, nylon, Manohara Kumar explained. In tune with its drive towards sustainability, TSF is targeting conversion from three-layer/four-layer structures to bi-lam structures for snacks applications, he said.

“The first (five-layer) machine is performing well, and we are very confident that this addition in capacity is the right move in our journey to providing innovative and viable solutions to brands and converters,” he said.

During our visit to Toppan’s plant in April 2024, Packaging South Asia had the opportunity to see the existing Filmex II five-layer CPP line 1 in operation. We also saw the Brückner BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) line 5. Work is in full swing for a new hybrid BOPP-BOPE line, which is set to become operational this year.

As written by Packaging South Asia, TSF’s team recently held BOPE trials at Brückner’s technology center to prepare for the upcoming BOPP/BOPE line. TSF optimized film properties, examined BOPE structures for printable, metallizable, and barrier films, and produced sample rolls for converting tests. This was achieved through seamless teamwork with global raw material suppliers, including Asian producers, and Toppan, which prepared pre-samplings for their converting trials and customers.

“As a part of our product development plan, we had different BOPE film trials at Brückner’s lab and the results were satisfactory,” Manohara Kumar said.

After these trials, TSF is even more confident about the readiness of BOPE films (printable, heat sealable, metalized category) for commercial launch, he explained. Toppan Speciality Films plans to start commercial production and the sales of BOPP/BOPE films from the new line in Q1 of FY26, he said.
