PackPlus Review

On Saturday July 11, the fourth and last day of the PackPlus 2009 exhibition ended on a busy note, with visitors flocking in -- who none of the exhibitors had expected anymore after three days of empty hallways. On the first three days, the exhibitors, who numbered around 300, interacted mainly amongst each other. They were, however, not too unhappy about this, as the technologies on show were of high quality, with both technology users and suppliers exhibiting, and the relaxed atmosphere being an occasion to exchange ideas and addresses. Synergies that could have been fused by organising the PackAge Conference within or close to the exhibition grounds were spoilt by holding it at a fancy far-away hotel, thus keeping away conference participants from the exhibition and exhibition visitors from the conference.

Waiting and watching

On the whole the Sri Lankan converters are cautious — for instance one is happy about large investments made two years ago that were hugely successful but also glad about not going forward with a repeat investment. They are content to work with a balance of new technology and old machines until the economy turns around. Some larger packaging companies speak of putting off investment for another couple of years. There is also some speculation as to what the impending IMF infusion of more than US$ 1.9 billion will do to the economy and currency valuation.

Team India readies for packaging Grand Prix

The Sensex has rallied well over the past month, even crossing its highest point rally of the past six months. The question on everyone’s mind was has the market recovered? Has the Indian packaging industry survived the global economic recession? While most would claim that the worst is over, many thoughts are still hovering on a note of cautious optimism. Compare this to eight months ago, with the doomsayers predicting a bleak outlook for the economy. But according to the luxury packaging service providers PSA spoke to in Mumbai, things are looking up.

CITO Systems on tour in India

Germany-based CITO System GmbH is a middle-sized company with more than 100 years of technical know-how in printing and paper converting. Its product range is divided into two areas: BoxLine diecutting systems for folding boxes, corrugated boxes and displays, and PrintLine systems for inline finishing and antimarking. The company is represented worldwide through a large network of dealers, in India by A.S. Print Aids Pvt. Ltd. Recently, their application technician Michael Zelinger was on a customer visit tour in India for ten days, in Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi. Technical workshops were held and there were discussions about tasks and challenges around the whole packaging production. The importance of the right choice of creasing parameters and their effect on the quality of creasing was one of the major topics. CITO also made a  presentation of its RSP Inline Finishing System during a training workshop in diecutting techniques which took place in Chennai for the staff of the Heidelberg Print Media Academy India.

Kumar Printers not going to Greater Noida

Kumar Printers has come a long way since we wrote about them last in September 2004. The company had just installed a brand new Heidelberg 6-colour CD 102 at the time. As we wrote more than four years ago, Kumar Printers are the leading board-packaging printers of North India and one of several who have invested in brand new multicolour presses. Suppliers to transnational manufacturers such as Gillette, Moser Baer, and Ranbaxy, the company has a steady and low-key approach.

Steady growth in offset, gravure and flexo — Uteco, W&H, Comexi, Rotomec, Titan, Mark...

The Indian packaging industry continues to grow although there has been some cost and delays in opening of Letter of Credit. The flexible industry seems to be recovering from the high price of oil and is poised to continue its expansion to become the lowest cost produce of high quality films in the world. IDMC (Indian Dairy Milk Cooperative) which installed a W&H blown film line and Primaflex CI press just a couple of years ago in their packaging plant has now gone in for a Uteco wide web flexo from Italy. However, they have gone in for another W&H Varex blown film line. However as our readers are well aware, Uflex has purchased a W&H Miraflex for use with an EB curing. We have also heard that Uflex has purchased a Rotomec in the 4000 series. Tuflex at Palej in Gujarat has also installed RS 4003 Rotomec and a Titan SR8 slitter and rewinder.
