On the whole the Sri Lankan converters are cautious — for instance one is happy about large investments made two years ago that were hugely successful but also glad about not going forward with a repeat investment. They are content to work with a balance of new technology and old machines until the economy turns around. Some larger packaging companies speak of putting off investment for another couple of years. There is also some speculation as to what the impending IMF infusion of more than US$ 1.9 billion will do to the economy and currency valuation.

Much like drupa last year, China Print in its 7th edition emphasised packaging both as a growing segment in offset printing and in its more specific flexo, gravure and ancillary equipment settings. Established 25 years ago, China Print has become the largest printing fair in China, and the second largest in the world when considering the number of exhibitors. Compared to its last edition in 2005, exhibitor numbers rose by 30% to 1,284 while the visitor count – 68,000 – remained flat and even declined as compared to 2001 when it reached 75,000. Including repeat visitors, China Print’s total of 160,000 visitor entries over the five days, however, makes it the busiest printing exhibition after drupa. In terms of unique visitor numbers, it is closing in on IGAS Tokyo and has already overtaken the Ipex Birmingham show and Print Chicago.

Kumar Printers has come a long way since we wrote about them last in September 2004. The company had just installed a brand new Heidelberg 6-colour CD 102 at the time. As we wrote more than four years ago, Kumar Printers are the leading board-packaging printers of North India and one of several who have invested in brand new multicolour presses. Suppliers to transnational manufacturers such as Gillette, Moser Baer, and Ranbaxy, the company has a steady and low-key approach.

The Indian packaging industry continues to grow although there has been some cost and delays in opening of Letter of Credit. The flexible industry seems to be recovering from the high price of oil and is poised to continue its expansion to become the lowest cost produce of high quality films in the world. IDMC (Indian Dairy Milk Cooperative) which installed a W&H blown film line and Primaflex CI press just a couple of years ago in their packaging plant has now gone in for a Uteco wide web flexo from Italy. However, they have gone in for another W&H Varex blown film line. However as our readers are well aware, Uflex has purchased a W&H Miraflex for use with an EB curing. We have also heard that Uflex has purchased a Rotomec in the 4000 series. Tuflex at Palej in Gujarat has also installed RS 4003 Rotomec and a Titan SR8 slitter and rewinder.
