The third edition of the Save Food initiative will take place alongside the interpack exhibition in Dusseldorf in May. At the international Save Food Congress on 4 May 2017, speakers from business, science, government and civil society will get together to shed some light on the various facets of the food waste problem.

Kuraray, a world leader in the production and development of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (under the brand name EVAL), showcased its films for packaging at the recently concluded Plastivision show in Mumbai. Packages have to perform numerous feats simultaneously: meet the needs of marketing and sales, comply with safety and hygiene regulations, and satisfy such consumer requirements as sustainability and easier handling while keeping the cost of production, transport and storage low. Thanks to the very latest machines with highly automated sensor- and microprocessor-controlled drive technology, coupled with innovative materials that can be produced and disposed of sustainably, the packaging industry has succeeded in converting a 6,000-year-old idea into a modern high-tech product.

According to a recent announcement by QuadTech, Indian publishing house Malayala Manorama has purchased a suite of QuadTech print quality control solutions—the ICON Integrated Platform, Register Guidance with MultiCam and Ribbon Control with MultiCam. 

The first ever Packaging Design Information Technology (PDIT) conference, held concurrently with the DrinkTech-PackTech-FoodPex Exhibition in Mumbai in December last year, was attended by stakeholders from a large number of organizations in the food processing, design, technology and healthcare sectors. It covered a wide spectrum of issues related to design and innovation, environment and sustainability, food wastage, the packaging supply chain, retail modernization and new technologies for new materials, simplified structures, digital printing and enhancement.

Participating for the first time in PrintPack India, UK-based Arden Software will showcase the workflow and design tools during the five-day trade show. The company has, in just one year, successfully managed to install around 15 licenses in India. Speaking about the organization, Manish Bhaskar, director and business head – Asia, Arden Asia Pacific Software says, “Arden software is a 29-year-old company, and recently we set a base in Delhi. The company develops integrated solutions that help the converter to have control over manufacturing process right from the design to final dispatch. Arden Software is a global supplier of solutions, and besides India, we have over 11,000 installations across the US- and UK-based convertors.” 

While one person throws it in the bin, another person is still happy to eat it. And in fact we are not talking about food in the Third World, but food in our industrial nations – food which is thrown away simply because the label says so, even though the content of the package is still edible. It’s a well-known fact that a product may have exceeded its best-before date some time ago, yet it is still perfectly harmless. Courageous consumers often try a bit of yoghurt to see if it’s still OK, even though the label indicates otherwise. And industry, retailers and governments are equally aware of the issue.
