The India Plastics Pact is a collaboration between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), WWF India, and WRAP, a UK-based NGO funded by the UK Research & Innovation (UKRI). The Pact is an ambitious, collaborative initiative that aims to bring together businesses, governments, and NGOs across the whole value chain to reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics in their value chain.
Mondelez approach towards sustainability
As part of Mondelez’s commitment to reduce its environmental impact, the company is addressing the biggest sustainability challenges relevant to its business, including plastics pollution. Over the last 70+ years of its presence in India, the company committed to making its snacks the right way to preserve the planet and meet the aspirations of consumers every day.
Over 90% of the company’s packaging is Designed for Recyclability (DFR). In the last two years, Mondelez has achieved 100% Extended Producer Responsibility targets in India. It recently made a strategic investment in collaboration with Sustainable Futures into Project WOW to recycle Multi-Layered Plastic (MLP) waste.
Mondelez India Foods (formerly Cadbury India) has been present in India for over 70 years. Part of Mondelez International, the company operates in the chocolate, beverages, biscuits, and candy categories in India with brands like Cadbury Dairy Milk, Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk, Cadbury Celebrations, Cadbury Bournville, among others.
Significant plastic waste remains uncollected in India
India generates 9.46 million metric tonnes of plastic waste annually, of which 40% goes uncollected. Addressing this, the India Plastics Pact aims to promote public-private collaborations that enable solutions to eliminate the plastics we do not need, bring innovation to packaging design, and capture the value of the plastics we use. The vision, targets, and ambition of the India Plastics Pact are aligned with the circular economy principles of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy.
India is establishing the first Plastics Pact in Asia – the 12th in the world. CII, WWF, and Wrap drive the initiative launched on 3 September. The India Pact will have a similar vision to the other global pacts (aligned as per the Ellen MacArthur Foundation principles) and focus on four targets.
