Global packaging leader Amcor highlighted a series of sustainable packaging innovations and advanced product development initiatives at the 11th Injection, Blow Moulding & PET International Business Summit organized by ElitePlus in Mumbai.
Speaking at the summit, Graeme Hood, vice president of R&D at Amcor Global Rigid Packaging Solutions, outlined the company’s approach to innovation, which combines consumer insights, material science, product design and manufacturing technology to develop sustainable packaging solutions.
Hood said Amcor invests more than US$70 million annually in rigid plastics research and development and employs over 400 R&D professionals across five innovation centers located in the US, Europe and China. He noted that the company works closely with customers and consumers to accelerate product development through digital design tools, rapid prototyping and testing.
Among the innovations presented was a lightweight thin-wall dairy packaging solution that reduces material use by up to 36% compared with conventional containers. Developed using advanced finite element analysis and injection-compression molding technology, the packaging offers significant reductions in carbon footprint and extended producer responsibility (EPR) costs while maintaining product performance.
The company showcased mono-material dairy packaging that eliminates aluminum foil seals, simplifying recycling and reducing supply chain complexity. The solution uses polypropylene-based components and is designed to improve recyclability while lowering packaging material requirements.
In the beverage and food segment, Amcor highlighted a lightweight PET hot-fill jar designed for wide-mouth applications. The container offers more than 80% weight reduction and up to 25% cost savings compared with traditional packaging formats, while maintaining stability during hot-fill processing.
Hood highlighted Amcor’s fully recyclable polyolefin dispensing pump, which replaces conventional metal springs with a proprietary bellows system, and the Pneumohaler, a breath-actuated inhalation device designed to improve ease of use for respiratory patients. The device is expected to be manufactured in India for the domestic market.
Concluding his presentation, Hood said Amcor continues to leverage its global expertise in materials, technology and manufacturing to deliver sustainable packaging solutions tailored to local market needs.
