Multinational packaging and solutions company UFlex has commissioned its first overseas WPP (woven polypropylene) bags manufacturing plant in Mexico. Established with an investment of approximately US$ 52 million, the facility, spread across 10 acres, marks a major milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy and significantly strengthens UFlex’ presence in the Americas.

The plant, located in Altamira, Mexico, has been designed to meet the highest international standards of engineering, efficiency and sustainability, the company stated in a release. Equipped with advanced European machinery, it operates through clean, low-noise and emission-free processes in line with UFlex’s global ESG commitments.

The plant features an in-house recycling unit and a zero solid waste discharge facility that maximizes material recovery, minimizes waste generation and promotes responsible disposal. With an annual production capacity of 80 million WPP bags, the facility is well positioned to serve the growing demand for high-performance packaging solutions across the Americas, UFlex stated.

The WPP bags produced at the site are engineered for greater strength, incorporate mite-preventive laser venting technology that allows air to escape while preventing the ingress of mites, and feature precision hot-air sealing technology adaptable to a variety of bag sizes and specifications, ensuring both durability and product safety.

Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, president – flexible packaging and new product development, UFlex, said, “The commissioning of our WPP packaging plant in Mexico represents a strategic step in expanding our global manufacturing network and strengthening our presence in the Americas. Pet ownership is steadily rising across North and South America, driving increased demand for premium pet food and high-performance packaging solutions.

“The North American pet food packaging market, valued at over USD 12 billion1 in 2026 is projected to witness sustained growth, while Latin America continues to emerge as a high-potential market driven by urbanization, rising disposable incomes, and growing awareness of pet nutrition. This growth trajectory is driving demand for durable, hygienic, and sustainable WPP bag formats that can withstand the challenges of transportation and storage while preserving product freshness. The new facility will enable us to deliver innovative, high-quality packaging solutions closer to our customers, ensure shorter turnaround times, and support the evolving sustainability and performance needs of the region’s fast-growing pet food industry.”

The plant houses an integrated converting facility incorporating sustainable water-based inks and operating at speeds of up to 300 meters per minute. It includes an integrated quality and environmental control laboratory to ensure consistent product quality and environmental compliance. In addition, the facility produces high-quality WPP fabric for manufacturing woven polypropylene bags.
