Packaging is evolving from a protective layer into a critical brand-building tool, with personalization, sustainability, and digital printing becoming essential for engaging younger consumers, A Appadurai of HP said during a presentation at the Spectaledge event organized by HP, SpectalPack, and Redington in Bengaluru.

Appadurai said brands now compete not only for shelf space but also for consumer attention across both digital and physical channels. Referring to the concept of the “moment of truth,” he said every interaction with a product influences purchasing decisions, while online research, product use, and social media sharing have created multiple touchpoints between brands and consumers.

He said changing consumer demographics are driving a fundamental shift in packaging strategies. Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha consumers, who account for about 65% of India’s population, increasingly value sustainability, speed, convenience, and products that reflect their personal identities. At the same time, shorter product life cycles are forcing companies to introduce new products and packaging more frequently than in the past.

According to Appadurai, digital printing enables brands to respond to these trends by allowing variable designs, eliminating minimum print runs, and reducing environmental impact. He said the technology makes it possible to produce personalized packaging, even for a single unit, enabling companies to launch targeted campaigns quickly while minimizing waste.

Using examples from global consumer brands, Appadurai said customized packaging has generated measurable business benefits, including higher sales, stronger customer engagement, and greater social media visibility. Campaigns featuring personalized names, regional languages, limited-edition designs, and consumer participation help brands build deeper emotional connections with customers, he said.

He highlighted the growing role of packaging in communicating product origins, supporting farmers, and improving supply chain transparency. Younger consumers increasingly want to know where products come from and how they are made, making storytelling through packaging an important competitive advantage, he said.

Appadurai added that advances in digital printing and software now allow brands to create highly customized packaging for individual consumers, seasonal promotions, co-branding initiatives, and marketing events, helping companies strengthen customer loyalty while driving business growth.
