Delhi-based Al Mehtab Industries – a dry fruits trading company established by Mehtab Singh Kochar in 1925 – is also a leading PET recycling solution provider in the country.

According to Jatin Garg from Al Mehtab Industries, Kochar’s eldest son Ram Inder Singh Kochar became the first person in India to have a bottle-to-bottle recycling technology at a time when everyone was focusing on bottle-to-fiber. The junior Kochar had great success in terms of the brands that came on board, Garg added.

At present, Al Mehtab Industries, which entered the sustainability business in 2012, is expanding into the HDPE and PP recycling sphere, Garg said, adding currently the company has a production capacity of 24,000 tons annually for rPET in its plant in Gajraula in Uttar Pradesh, 120 km from Delhi.

Al Mehtab Industries has tied up with a few waste management companies operating out of Agra, and North and South Delhi. While Nationwide Waste Management is a subsidiary of Al Mehtab Industries, Mumbai-based Ira Sustainable Living helps with traceability and carbon emission.

Al Mehtab has a joint venture with Taiwan-based Cowin for use of their Japanese-patented machines for PET, rPET, HDPE, and polyolefin recycling.

The company supplies its rPET granules to FMCG companies such as Marico, ITC, Godrej, Perfetti, Reckitt, Unilever, Diageo, and PepsiCo. According to Garg, the USP of Al Mehtab’s rPET granules is the clear bottle appearance, which comes from its early start in the PET recycling business. Al Mehtab uses hand-picked machines from Germany, Austria and Taiwan for its PET recycling operations.
