At a memorial meeting on 3 May 2026, the extended Dutta family, the Delhi community, and its printing and packaging industry bid farewell to one of its acknowledged pioneers, Satya Narain Dutta, who passed away on 27 April 2026. A visionary entrepreneur, craftsman, and innovator, SN Dutta leaves behind a legacy that is strongly connected to the evolution and growth of India’s label printing industry.
The legacy includes his son Abhay Datta’s manufacturing establishment for label presses and other accessories known as UV Graphic Technologies, and the continuously growing and thriving label converting business of Dutta Press, now run by his grandsons, Akshay and Anuj Datta.
Born in 1926 in Shimla, into a large family, Satya Narain Dutta is described as an extremely disciplined person. After his BA, he was inspired by his uncle to enter the printing business, which led to his transforming the label industry, especially for the beverage segment, with considerable ambition and perseverance.
He founded Dutta Press in 1956 with an investment of ₹2,500, beginning with a manually operated Chandler & Price printing machine. This eventually became one of the leading Indian label printing businesses expanding steadily—from its origins in Darya Ganj to a purpose-built factory in the Okhla Industrial Area Phase II, of South Delhi.
With an eye and head for quality and for modernization, SN Dutta embraced new challenges, technology and automation. His investments in advanced machinery and new processes helped modernize label production across the country. He was among the first to print security products and multiple leaf airline tickets, going on to pioneer and in a way to dominate the production of highly decorative beer and liquor labels.
Dutta Press was the first to use flexo presses and automated hot foil stamping for beer and liquor labels in the country, contributing to the improvement of wet glue labels with embellishments such as embossing and water-based coatings. It was also among the first label converters to adopt the use of pressure-sensitive label stocks. SN Dutta’s insistence on excellence improved the efficiency, consistency, durability, and scalability for the entire beverage and packaging sector.
Dutta Press became the preferred print partner for some of India’s most prominent beverage and brewing companies, including Mohan Meakin, United Breweries, Carlsberg, Pernod Ricard, Mount Shivalik, Jagjit Distilleries, Allied Blenders and Distillers, and Dabur. Dutta’s reputation for precision and uncompromising quality, his overall demeanor and style of business, earned him immense respect among customers, suppliers, and competitors.

As recounted by numerous members of the community at his memorial service, Dutta was a perfectionist—meticulous, punctual, deeply involved in every detail of his operations. His management style was hands-on and exacting, setting the cultural foundation and tone of the business. Those who worked with him remember him as demanding yet inspiring—someone who accepted nothing less than the highest standards.
Beyond the business and the factory floor, he was deeply family-oriented and maintained a wide spectrum of close relationships with the community. His generosity extended well beyond business, contributing with his hands-on interest in the construction of numerous parks, ashrams, and other charitable initiatives.
Satya Narain Dutta was a silent builder of institutions, a meticulous creator of standards, and a mentor to what has become one of the most significant and fastest-growing industries in the country, and to his own family’s group of companies, not only for producing labels but also for manufacturing label presses. It is an honor to have met him even once briefly, in Okhla and the industry and community in the New Delhi NCR should take a deep breath and respect his memory by learning from his honorable way of doing business.
The New Delhi NCR has become one of the leading printing and packaging centers in the country, with the contributions of persons like Satya Narain Dutta, who built family-owned businesses. There are several such founders of family-owned printing and packaging businesses that one knows of, who have led in the technological advancement of the industry, such as VV Purie, SN Mehta, MK Bhargava, KL Shroff, Ashok Chaturvedi, Bhuvnesh Seth, and possibly several others that I leave out without meaning to disrespect them in any way.
In the same vein, it is important to acknowledge that several of these businesses have grown, diversified, and are now increasingly run by their third generation. In my by no means comprehensive list, these include Thomson Press, Kumar Printers, Nutech, and Dutta Press.
