Digital and automation to drive growth

Heidelberg’s new chief executive Rainer Hundsdörfer, who joined the company six months ago, said that after a rough patch the company was essentially back on track with improved financial results in the final quarter of the last financial year. Three answers to the UV or not UV question

Forty years ago UV printing meant a lamp housed in a reflective sleeve mounted in the delivery of a sheetfed press. The inks and coatings were not the user-friendly consumables they are today and some press manufacturers were wary about endorsing the technology. (Editors note – In 1990, we could not find a single multicolor press in India with UV curing when we needed to print on synthetic paper from Yupo and Arjormari for a large international non-profit organization’s child health program.)

The UV, HUV, LED and Multiwave LED story in India

In the early 1990’s, when we needed to print outdoor posters on synthetic papers from Yupo and Arjomari, we were unable to find any UV offset sheetfed press in the country. The first time I heard of a UV multicolor press was in Mumbai, when we saw samples of plastic cosmetic packaging for export by Utility Packaging printed on a second-hand Heidelberg multicolor press with conventional UV inks. (There was no other UV print curing system available at the time.) The first new multicolor press with full interdeck and end-of-press was the KBA Rapida 105 imported by Parksons Packaging for its Daman plant in 2005.
