The Sensex has rallied well over the past month, even crossing its highest point rally of the past six months. The question on everyone’s mind was has the market recovered? Has the Indian packaging industry survived the global economic recession? While most would claim that the worst is over, many thoughts are still hovering on a note of cautious optimism. Compare this to eight months ago, with the doomsayers predicting a bleak outlook for the economy. But according to the luxury packaging service providers PSA spoke to in Mumbai, things are looking up.

Graham Packaging Company has introduced new lightweight the lightest weight bottle in the smooth-walled, hot-fill category which the company claims is a good match for teas, juices, and isotonic drinks. The new bottle is called the Escape and represents a step forward in invertible-base technology.

The Coca-Cola Company recently unveiled a new plastic bottle made partially from plants.  The PlantBottle is claimed to be fully recyclable, has a lower reliance on a non-renewable resource, and reduces carbon emissions compared with petroleum-based PET plastic bottles. It is made from a blend of petroleum-based materials and up to 30% plant-based materials.

Kumar Printers has come a long way since we wrote about them last in September 2004. The company had just installed a brand new Heidelberg 6-colour CD 102 at the time. As we wrote more than four years ago, Kumar Printers are the leading board-packaging printers of North India and one of several who have invested in brand new multicolour presses. Suppliers to transnational manufacturers such as Gillette, Moser Baer, and Ranbaxy, the company has a steady and low-key approach.

In the May 2009 Innovia Films’ compostable cellulose-based packaging film, NatureFlex, had been put to the test by the UK’s leading consumer body and gained its approval. In the May edition of the Which? Gardening magazine, five compostable materials, used in supermarket packaging, were tested using a home compost bin in the usual way - filled with garden waste and turned at two and four month intervals.  Observations were recorded as to how well each item composted. At the end of the two month testing period the fresh produce packs had completely broken down and there were only minute pieces of the cereal bag remaining.
