Asia Pulp & Paper’s Foopak Bio Natura named Sustainability Product of the Year

Replacing plastic in food packaging

Asia Pulp & Paper’s (APP) Foopak Bio Natura suite of food packaging products has been named ‘Sustainability Product of the Year’ by the Business Intelligence Group in the 2018 Sustainability Awards program. The Sustainability Awards honors people, teams and organizations who have made sustainability an integral part of their business practice or overall mission.

APP’s Foopak Bio Natura is replacing plastic, foam and PE-coated food packaging with a fully compostable, sustainable paperboard alternative. The matter is especially compatible for both hot and cold beverage cups and other food packaging. Moreover, the cup stock can sustain heat up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit/220 degrees Celsius.

In addition, FDA-certified approves of Foopak Bio Natura cup stock. It meets the standards with the FTC’s Green Guides for biodegradability and compostability. Testing by the Isega Institute shows scientific evidence the stock can completely break down and return to nature by decomposing in a matter of 12 weeks. Additionally, home compost pile or a facility can easily compost Bio Natura.

“Achieving this award affirms our commitment to sustainability in all areas of our operation,” said Elim Sritaba, director of sustainability and stakeholder engagement, APP. “Furthermore, beyond product development, we’re committed to providing businesses with the solutions they need to do the same.”

“Foopak Bio Natura provides the food and restaurant industries with a comprehensive suite of sustainable packaging solutions. It offers this compostable option to an underserved part of the market,” said Felix Koh, senior vice president and Global Business Unit Head, APP. “And, we’re happy to offer an alternative solution to packaging waste.”

“We are proud to reward and recognize Asia Pulp & Paper for its sustainability efforts,” said Maria Jimenez, chief nominations officer, Business Intelligence Group. “Our judges were sure that APP’s vision and strategy will continue to deliver results toward a cleaner, more sustainable world. Congratulations!”

“Sustainability Awards 2018 honors and prides APP with the ‘Sustainable Product of the Year’. Furthermore, it affirms our commitment to being sustainable. We deliver innovative products that help solve some of the most pressing environmental issues of today,” said Rohan Rodrigues, director, APP India. What’s more, we believe that with the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions in India products like Foopak Bio Natura will address the problem of sustainable packaging in the near future.”

Moreover, APP joins the ranks of other Sustainability Awards winners including P&G, Danone North America, Hilton Software, Seed Phytonutrients and Dow Chemical.

Packaging South Asia — resilient, growing and impactful — daily, monthly — always responsive

The multi-channel B2B in print and digital 17-year-old platform matches the industry’s growth trajectory. The Indian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Middle East packaging industries are looking beyond the resilience of the past three years. They are resuming capacity expansion and diversification, with high technology and automation in new plants and projects.

As we present our 2024 publishing plan, India’s real GDP growth for the financial year ending 31 March 2024 will exceed 6%. The packaging industry growth will match the GDP growth in volume terms and surpass it by at least 3% in terms of nominal growth allowing for price inflation in energy, raw materials, consumables, and capital equipment.

The capacity for flexible film manufacturing in India increased by 45% over the past four years. With orders in place, we expect another 20% capacity addition in 2024 and 2025. Capacities in monocartons, corrugation, aseptic liquid packaging, and labels are growing similarly. As the consumption story returns over the next six months, we expect demand to return and exceed the growth trajectory of previous years. The numbers are positive for most of the economies in the region – and as shown by our analytics, our platform increasingly reaches and influences these.

For responsible and sustainable packaging, with its attendant regulations and compliances, there is significant headroom to grow in India and the region. Our coverage includes the entire packaging supply chain – from concept to shelf and to waste collection, sorting, and recycling.

We target brand owners, product managers, raw material suppliers, packaging designers and converters, and recyclers. This is a large and complex canvas – the only thing that can work is your agile thinking and innovation together with our continuous learning and persistence.

The coming year looks to be an up year in this region, and this is the right time to plan your participation and marketing communication – in our rich and highly targeted business platform with human resources on the ground. Share your thoughts and plans to inspire and mobilize our editorial and advertising teams!
