PET bottles

In our May 2018 issue, we reported Ioniqa’s development of a new circular technology for 100% recycling of used PET bottles and their tie-up via a JV with Unilever and Indorama to exploit and commercialize this process. This technology can convert any PET waste, including colored waste, back into building blocks that will be converted into transparent food-grade PET resins by Indorama. Ioniqa is a start-up technology company that is a spin off from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.

Coca-Cola has now announced that they have entered into a loan agreement with Ioniqa to advance the development of this recycling technology. This will help accelerate the commercial development of the process for transforming hard-to-recycle PET waste into high quality food-grade PET resins. This includes colored PET bottles, which are mostly excluded from recycling streams at present.

Coca-Cola is committed to using 50% of recycled content in their bottles by 2030. As reported earlier, Ioniqa has already demonstrated the effectiveness of their new technology on a pilot scale and is now in the process of constructing a 10,000 metric ton a year plant in the Netherlands that is expected to be commissioned during 2019.
