Brands and packaging companies need to move beyond sustainability pledges and adopt measurable carbon reporting to meet rising consumer and regulatory expectations, Miin Wong of HP Industrial Print said at the Spectaledge event organized by HP, SpectalPack and Redington in Bengaluru.

Speaking during a presentation on sustainable packaging, Wong said sustainability has become a key agenda item across industries. She said meaningful progress requires action rather than discussion.

Drawing parallels with the growing acceptance of refurbished technology, Wong said businesses can reshape consumer behavior by positioning sustainable choices as the preferred option. She noted that the packaging and printing industries have a significant role to play by reducing waste, optimizing inventories and minimizing resource consumption.

Wong said expectations around sustainability are increasing rapidly, with both consumers and regulators demanding greater transparency and accountability. Voluntary environmental commitments made by companies are increasingly being translated into mandatory reporting requirements, making reliable emissions data more important than ever.

To help address this challenge, Wong highlighted HP Indigo’s CO2 Calculator, which enables brands and print service providers to quantify the carbon footprint of individual print jobs and packaging projects. The tool eliminates the need for complex manual calculations by providing measurable emissions data for each print campaign.

According to Wong, the calculator allows companies to compare the environmental impact of different print options, identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and improve supply chain transparency through data-driven decision-making rather than assumptions.

The availability of verified emissions data also supports environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting and helps companies track progress toward their sustainability goals, Wong said.

She added that HP has developed the technology to make it easier for customers to integrate sustainability into their operations, enabling brands to offer environmentally responsible packaging solutions without relying on estimates or guesswork.

Emphasizing the importance of measurement, Wong said businesses cannot improve what they do not measure. She encouraged companies to adopt digital printing technologies and carbon measurement tools to transform sustainability ambitions into tangible business outcomes and support long-term growth.
