Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box has launched a new ‘SmartLife’ service to improve the shelf-life of boxed wines. SmartLife uses a combination of filling-performance diagnostics and practical training to identify opportunities for improvement within the supply chain that, according to the company, will ultimately increase the shelf-life of Bag-in-Box wines.

This diagnostic process provides an opportunity for customers to benchmark the oxygen level of their product against Smurfit Kappa’s unique worldwide oxygen database.

Speaking about the new service Patrick Vuchot, scientific director of Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box, said, “We have capitalized on our 40 years of expertise as market leader in Bag-in-Box solutions to create SmartLife. There are eight key parameters and multiple combinations of them that determine wine shelf-life throughout the supply chain process. Our SmartLife service uses these parameters to determine how we can contribute to increasing Bag-in-Box shelf-life, wine quality and ultimately sales.”

SmartLife process

The SmartLife process follows three key steps. Smurfit Kappa initially works with the customer to define problem areas within the supply chain and identify potential causes of inadequate shelf-life for Bag-in-Box wines and possible improvements.

Next, SmartLife experts provide a basic or complete diagnostic of the filling process to determine the critical points where shelf-life can be improved at the lowest cost.

Finally, for those who want to expand their technical knowledge of the Bag-in-Box and Pouch-Up packaging solution range, Smurfit Kappa and Vitop provide Bag-in-Box science seminars, which are available either virtually or in real life for the packaged wine, fruit juice, and water industries.

The launch of SmartLife is further reinforcement of Smurfit Kappa’s position as the market leader of Bag-in-Box packaging solutions in Europe and the Americas.

The Covid-19 pandemic led to the country-wide lockdown on 25 March 2020. It will be two years tomorrow as I write this. What have we learned in this time? Maybe the meaning of resilience since small companies like us have had to rely on our resources and the forbearance of our employees as we have struggled to produce our trade platforms.

The print and packaging industries have been fortunate, although the commercial printing industry is still to recover. We have learned more about the digital transformation that affects commercial printing and packaging. Ultimately digital will help print grow in a country where we are still far behind in our paper and print consumption and where digital is a leapfrog technology that will only increase the demand for print in the foreseeable future.

Web analytics show that we now have readership in North America and Europe amongst the 90 countries where our five platforms reach. Our traffic which more than doubled in 2020, has at times gone up by another 50% in 2021. And advertising which had fallen to pieces in 2020 and 2021, has started its return since January 2022.
