German ink manufacturer Siegwerk will acquire the Dutch coating specialist Allinova, which is said to have a high technical competence especially in the formulation and production of water-based dispersions.

Allinova was founded in 2005 by Gijs Elfrink and initially focused on the development and sale of flame retardants and wax emulsions. In 2016, Bob Horsthuis came onboard as a joint owner. He helped develop the business further, expanding the product portfolio into a mature mix of high-quality dispersions and wax emulsions that can be used for packaging, as well as for other products such as flame retardants, repellents, crosslinkers, and so on. Following the completion of the acquisition, Gijs Elfrink and Bob Horsthuis will continue to remain part of the team.

The context behind this acquisition lies in Siegwerk’s decision in April 2024 to set up a new global business unit dedicated to functional coatings as part of its commitment to develop sustainable packaging in line with a circular economy.

Today, the Circular Economy Coatings (CEC) unit serves as a cross-divisional hub of excellence for circular solutions, adding specialized functional coating technologies to the company’s conventional coating offerings.

Gilles Le Moigne, business head of CEC at Siegwerk, commented,“The acquisition will enable us to combine Allinova’s technical capabilities and expertise with our global reach and in-depth market knowledge.”

Nicolas Wiedmann, CEO of Siegwerk, added, “With the acquisition of Allinova, we are now further expanding this technological expertise in the field of functional coatings, paving the way for even more packaging innovations in the future.”

This acquisition follows on from other strategic investments that Siegwerk has already completed during recent years. This includes La Sorgente, one of the major ink suppliers for flexographic printing in Italy – especially for flexible packaging as well as paper and board applications, which Siegwerk acquired in 2022. Such targeted investments have enabled the company to expand its global footprint and enhance its core business in packaging printing.

Both parties have agreed not to disclose any financial details. You can find further information on both companies from siegwerk.com and allinova.nl.
