AIMPLAS
Under the title Advanced Composites and Structural Materials, the first session will analyze the latest developments in structural composite materials, from traditional solutions to high-performance composites

AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, has organized for 6 and 7 October the first edition of its International Advanced Plastic Materials Seminar HI!-Plastics, an event created with the objective of bringing together companies, technology centers and innovation agents around the latest advances in high-performance materials and their industrial applications.

This seminar takes place in a context in which advanced materials play a key role in the transformation of strategic sectors such as aerospace, defense, automotive, transport, naval, electronics, construction and energy. The search for lighter, more resistant, functional and sustainable solutions is driving intense R&D activity in which collaboration throughout the entire value chain is essential to accelerate the arrival of these innovations to market.

To address this challenge, the seminar is configured as a meeting point to share real industrial challenges, recent technological developments and emerging research lines. Throughout the event, through a program divided into five blocks, high-performance materials and processes, dual-use technologies, functional solutions and sustainability strategies applied to advanced products and systems will be addressed. The event will combine technical presentations, poster sessions and networking spaces, fostering knowledge exchange and the generation of synergies to drive new collaboration opportunities in R&D projects at both national and international levels.

The main technological challenges in five blocks

Under the title Advanced Composites and Structural Materials, the first session will analyze the latest developments in structural composite materials, from traditional solutions to high-performance composites. New reinforcement architectures, advanced polymer matrices and their behaviour under demanding service conditions will be addressed. Among the presentations, highlights include contributions from specialists such as Helena Abril (AEMAC), Ferrie van Hattum (TPAC), Jaime García (Guztec Polymers) and Carlos Barreto (Norne), who will present trends, industrial applications and strategies to improve performance, durability and efficiency.

The second block, Fire Resistance in Advanced Materials: from Challenges to Applications, will focus on materials with functionalities that go beyond structural behaviour, addressing the challenges posed by the development of safe, sustainable flame retardant solutions aligned with current regulatory requirements. The most recent technical advances for engineering plastics, advanced fire protection strategies for materials designed for next-generation vehicles and the development of innovative reactive phosphorus-based solutions for rigid polyurethane foams for the building and construction sector will also be presented. The session will bring together internationally recognized specialists such as Lodovico Agostinis (AIMPLAS), Thomas Futterer, Tobias Moss and Roberto Chinchilla (Budenhem), Shannon Gainey (Huber), Jonathan Hall (William Blythe), Adrian Beard (Clariant), De-Yi Wang (IMDEA), as well as Sander Kroon (ICL) and Thoralf Küchler (Lanxess).

The third session, dedicated to Functional Materials and Advanced Manufacturing Processes, will explore the technologies driving the next generation of high-performance materials and their path to market. The block will bring together specialists such as Corina Neumeister and Reiner Sauerwein (Nabaltec), Lorenzo Impelluso (AIMPLAS) and Juanjo de la Cuesta (Future Fibers), who will address both the development of new functional materials and advances in the manufacturing processes necessary for their industrialization.

The presentations will analyze the potential of mineral flame retardants with thermal barrier properties and thermal conductivity, the latest innovations in continuous fibre composite materials and their evolution from advanced manufacturing technologies to industrial applications, as well as the development of high-performance fibres for demanding applications. The session will place special emphasis on scaling challenges, industrial integration and effective transfer of R&D to the productive environment, key aspects for accelerating the adoption of these advanced materials in strategic sectors.

The second day of the seminar will open with a presentation by the CMT – Clean Mobility & Thermofluids group of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), which will provide its vision on the challenges and opportunities of advanced materials in areas related to mobility and energy technologies. Following this intervention, the Energy and Dual-Use

Technologies block will address the role of advanced materials in the development of solutions for the energy transition and strategic dual-use applications, combining industrial vision and cutting-edge technological developments. The session will feature the participation of Andrés Cámara (ALBIS) and Diogo Vale (Corpower), who will offer a practical view of the most recent advances in this field. Through their presentations, success stories in the application of advanced plastic materials for high-demand sectors will be presented, as well as the experience accumulated over a decade of developing composite materials for the industrialization of wave energy, respectively.

Finally, the event will conclude with the block dedicated to Industrial Coatings with Advanced Properties, a session focused on innovative surface solutions that improve the performance, durability and functionality of components destined for high-demand sectors such as aeronautics, energy and industry.

This block will feature Blai López (AIMPLAS), Desiderio Díaz (Plasmatreat) and Agustín Chiminelli (ITA), who will present some of the most notable developments in the field of advanced coatings. The presentations will address technologies for protection against ice formation in the aeronautical sector through low-consumption heating coatings, advanced surface treatment solutions to improve the functionality and performance of materials, and the development of coatings with self-healing properties for wind turbines.

With this first edition of HI!-Plastics, sponsored by Plasmatreat and with the collaboration of PINFA, AIMPLAS reinforces its role as a reference in the research and development of advanced plastic materials, promoting collaboration and knowledge transfer as key pillars to address the technological and sustainability challenges of the industry.
