Funded within the programme EEA Grants through CDTI, the project EPS-FISH makes it possible to remove odours in fresh fish packages for their recycling and recovery. EPS FISH has been developed by Acteco and Aimplas, with really good results, since the recycled material obtained has been validated by means of manufacturing XPS and EPS insulating panels with adequate physical-mechanical properties.

Messe Düsseldorf India and IppStar have agreed to jointly organize a two-day conference on 16 and 17 December 2016, alongside the biannual International PackTech India / FoodPex India at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. While the PackTech India / FoodPex India will take place from 15 to 17 December 2016, the first annual IppStar-PackTech India Packaging Design, Innovation and Technology Conference will take place at the conference hall at the same site on 16 and 17 December.

Nagpur-based Veena Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BARC Centre for Incubation of Technologies (BARCIT), a part of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), for the use and scaling up of technology for manufacturing biodegradable and edible films for food and pharmaceuticals packaging.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FICCI’s) 2nd National Conference on Packaging Plastic – The Sustainable Choice held in New Delhi on 19 January 2016 was an elaborate affair witnessing the attendance of eminent people from the plastic packaging segment globally. Several students, sponsored by Sabic, were also given the opportunity to attend the conference in the national capital and learn from the industry experts first hand. While the welcome address was conducted by KK Seksaria, president, Plastindia Foundation, the inaugural session was moderated by Vinay Mathur, deputy secretary general, FICCI. Talking about the plastic industry, Mathur says, “Generally when we talk about ‘Make in India’ we tend to skip the point that ‘Make in India’ with zero defect is important and in the case of plastics it becomes even more vital.”

Almost a hundred years have passed since the first corrugated box was commercially produced in England in 1917. The converting industry in India is expected to embrace several technology changes in 2016 that are likely to alter current trends and themselves become new trends in the coming years. December 2015 saw the signing by 196 countries of the Paris agreement on climate change which should compel India to raise the trajectory of its green growth. With relatively high economic growth, and as the third largest carbon emission country there is a huge opportunity as well as necessity to ramp up renewable output and to decarbonize many industrial sectors.

Economic concerns, technological threat and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Throw in rapidly changing market expectations and media choices, and you have an industry that’s been on the back foot for several years. But a reversal is underway. Print is reinventing itself to be more vibrant than ever, an energetic force in a multichannel communications world. Laurel Brunner reports.
